The Voice of the People. Celebrating the 24th of July

Coming soon is the celebration of one historical moment which changed the shape customs and people of Nicoya forever.
But how did it come about?

The area of Nicoya a territory made up of land located what is now Nicaragua but also the south of Costa Rica (Tempisque river, the gulf of Nicoya) an area that unites with the San Juan river.
They shared a cultural likeness.
The people of the area very much identified with the way of living like those from the areas of Costa Rica. They did not feel close to their countrymen from Nicaragua.

Therefore, on the 24th of july 1824, the people of Nicoya had their voices heard with the representation by Cupertino Briceño before Spain.
There was also great interest for Costa Rica to gain this territory as the land was excellent in producing rice & sugar cane, now a common staple in the Tico households.

Now in 2010, school children will be rehearsing and school bands practising in the days leading up to this important date which helped shape the Costarrican culture into what it is today.
